Commercial Consulting

Maglus offers solutions to hi-tech development, hi-tech project management, and advanced engineering evaluation. Both T&M, and fixed cost solutions are available.

Hi-Tech Development:

Our creative team of engineers is always ready for the most challenging leading-edge design tasks.  From monster FPGAs to tinyOS controllers, we have developed, embedded, and optimized some of the world’s leading-edge technologies. Real-time multiple object tracking algorithms, cell-phone technologies with VoIP, and Giga-pixel cameras are but a few of the technologies we have developed. The figure below is a quick snapshot of recently used technologies:

Hi-Tech Project Management:

Perhaps one of the most challenging tasks facing the hi-tech development team is project management.  Accurate budget estimations and accurate schedules are always an issue, especially in the face of seemingly conflicting goals. For example, how do spiral development and extreme coding fit into the six-phase product development cycle?

We had faced these challenges in the past, and have an arsenal of tools for coping with these challenges in the future. Not surprisingly, we have found that traditional project management practices provide a solid logistical safety net for creating realistic budgets and schedules. The map below is a summary of the Maglus project management approach.

The following slide demonstrates an elegant way for accomplishing spiral development while executing a six-phase product development cycle:

Advanced Engineering Evaluation:

It is often the case that third-party evaluation of technologies or projects is required for tasks such as due dilligence, or pre-investment assessment.  For such tasks Maglus offers a detailed advanced-engineering evaluation service that completely separates commercialization evaluation from technology evaluation.  In recognition of this service, Maglus is listed as an official Maryland TEDCO commercialization reviewer (http://www.marylandtedco.org/).

Government Consulting

Maglus offers a complete range of government consulting services for US government SBIR, STTR, BAA, ATP, and ATD projects. Services are available on a Firm Fixed Price, or a Cost Plus Fixed Fee basis, in compliance with FARS regulations.

1.      Proposal Writing

1.1              As a business development effort, Maglus will help your company identify suitable SBIR (Small Business Innovative Research), BAA (Broad Agency Announcement), ATP (Advanced Technology Program), or ATD (Advanced Technology Directive) RFPs (Requests For Proposal).

1.2              Once suitable RFPs are located we will continue to write the proposal with you, and for you, including the engineering of detailed system design drawings, and conducting preliminary leading-edge technology research (e.g. algorithms required for the proposal).

1.3              Next, we continue to create a powerful proposal by networking to the proper TPOC (Technical Point Of Contact), and PM (Program Manager).  In addition, we will proactively locate companies that may team with yours towards winning the proposal, and successfully completing the project.

1.4              Throughout the proposal writing process we define clear objectives to be achieved, and the tasks necessary in order to reach those objectives.

2.      Project Management

2.1              The first step in planning each project is creating the tasks according to a suitable Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).  The WBS is derived from the project objectives and the nature of the technology to be developed.

2.2              Once the WBS is in place, a decision is made with regard to top-down or bottom-up project estimation, and then task refinement and scaling takes place.

2.3              Critical path planning is then used to determine which tasks can execute in parallel, and which tasks are absolutely dependent on each other.

2.4              With the critical path in place, scheduling of each task takes place, which usually happens in parallel to resource loading.

2.5              Determining the proper resource for each task, and balancing the resources in order to create an affordable schedule is the final step in the project plan.  In this step scientists (PhDs), software engineers, hardware engineers, technicians, project managers, and materials are assigned to each task of the project.  Only after this step is complete do we have a realistic budget and schedule for the project.

2.6              Next, travel, supplies, and incidentals are added to the project budget.

2.7              Finally, the project is matrixed into a spiral development effort, a six-phase product development effort, or a rapid prototyping effort.

3.      Engineering Services

Maglus offers a complete range of engineering services which include:

3.1              System Design Services

3.2              Hardware Design Services

3.3              Software Design Services

4.      Technical Report Writing

Once a proposal is awarded regular reports detailing the technological accomplishments of objectives, and the status of each task are expected on a regular basis.

4.1              Depending on the level of engineering services conducted by Maglus, detailed progress reports are provided on a regular basis.

4.2              Since most projects also require commercialization plans, Maglus, as an official Maryland TEDCO (http://www.marylandtedco.org/) commercialization reviewer is more than adept at creating strategic commercialization plans.
